At least 150,000 people were killed and some 200,000 injured January 12 in the deadliest earthquake in the Americas since the 1970 Peru earthquake, which killed an estimated 70,000 people.

Some 40 medics are on board the plane heading to the Russian capital.

The first Russian doctors arrived in Haiti shortly after the powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake, which devastated the impoverished Caribbean nation.

According to the Russian ministry, during the rescue operation Russian medics treated over 1,700 injured people, including more than 600 children.

Earlier Russian rescuers who had found nine Haitians, including two children, alive under the debris, returned to Russia.

Overall, Russian specialists worked on Haiti for over two weeks. The operation involved more than 150 Russian emergencies workers, including rescuers, sniffer dog teams and psychologists.

Russia also delivered over 30 metric tons of humanitarian cargoes to Haiti.
