The sci-fi blockbuster, which won James Cameron best director and best picture at Sunday"s Golden Globes, took in 132.49 million rubles ($4.47 million) over the weekend, with It"s Complicated trailing on 36.51 million rubles ($1.23 million).

The comedy starring Meryl Streep opened on Friday, and just beat Robert Downey Jr."s Sherlock Holmes (35.8 million rubles) into third.

Avatar has taken a total of 2.53 billion rubles ($84 million) in Russia since opening on December 17.

Also opening at the weekend was Up in the Air starring George Clooney, with ticket sales of 33.69 million rubles. The top-grossing domestic movie was Black Lightning, which ranked fifth with 25.99 million rubles ($876,000).

The rest of the top 10 were Disney"s The Princess and the Frog, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Daybreakers, Amelia and in 10th place a second Russian production, Schastlivy konets - Happy Ending.
