As has been common for the Russia team in Vancouver, the day was tinged with disappointment, with the men"s skiers, Nikolay Morilov and Alexey Petukhov, criticized by their coach over a slow start and the ice dance world champions fading to third behind the Canadian and U.S. skaters after leading following the compulsory dance.
The first Russian medalists of the day were Irina Khazova and Natalia Korosteleva in the women"s cross-country team sprint on Monday. The pair finished 4 seconds behind the German team of Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle and Claudia Nystad.
Swedes Anna Haag and Charlotte Kalla won the silver, just 0.6 seconds behind the Germans.
Flying Norwegian comes from behind
In the men"s event, there had been some speculation that the gold and silver medalists from the men"s individual sprint classic, Nikita Kriukov and Alexander Panzhinskiy, but Morilov and Petukhov were chosen.
